Newsletter Painting Tip

Tip of the Day :
Glazing can be done with Liquin Light. This is a non toxic way to have fast drying glazes without the smell and chemicals. An alternatives would be to use WALNUT OIL,a natural product that tends to be slow drying. Try out the Alkyde Walnut Oil Medium. A soft brush is a must, so ridges don't take away from the finished painting. Ideally the surface of your painting will be smooth with minimal brush strokes in order for the luminosity of the paint to be appreciated.

New Collectors

Congratulations to two new Laura Watmough Art collector...S. Miller from Alberta and G.Loveridge from Sasktchewan.

S. Miller purchased "Stone Cottage" and said that it reminded her of places and B&Bs she and her husband visited on their holidays. A great retirement present!

G. Loveridge saw the peonie painting on the internet and when she came to Edmonton for a visit, she came to the gallery for a peek. Well, we sent "Evening Glow" to her home in Sask. by purolater and it promply got lost!! We were worried for 8 days, but they finally delivered it in fine shape. It now hangs on her taupe walls and looks stunning!

July/August Events Glazing Workshop

Our first Glazing Workshop was a huge sucess! All students finished wonderful paintings that glowed with rich color and they finished them in less than 4 evenings! The textured canvas was a hit and fun to paint on.
August is a very busy time at Hidden Talent Fine Art School. Laura is on Summer hours, but behind the scenes she's busy with Adult and Children Summer Camps, Drop-ins and this year, Doug Swinton from Calgary is up for a Plein Air workshop.
Laura is also showing her work at the French Society CAVA On the horizon is the Second Annual Great North Paint Out in mid Sept.
For information email Laura at lwatmough@shaw.ca.

Thank You To The Students!

The Children's lessons are over this session. They were a bit shorter that usual due to Spring Break and Easter falling on different weekends. The children learn many skills and are unafraid to use them. They are an inspiration to me and the adults that see their work. They will also be shown at the St. Albert Trade Show the beginning of April. Hidden Talent Fine Art School's mandate is to provide that " positive experience" so many of us didn't have when we were taking art in school!

On another note...Happy Birthday to Kealy and Kristin! Their mothers have gotten me into the 'Birthday Party Entertainment' business. We had a lovely party for Kealy with 9 of her friends and we painted beautiful watercolors to take home. Kealy's mom matted and framed them on the spot! If YOU are interested in having art lessons as an activity for your child's birthday, please email me!!

Inspiration

This Thurs. Afternoon I am posting photos from the last week. Students take their inspiration from each other, from their families and people around them. About half are painting landscape from mountains to exotic beaches, a few are painting people or animals, a few florals. The choice of subject isn't as important as the desire to do your best and learn from it. One student came in with a few favorite photos, but they were definitely reference photos and not enough compositionally to paint. Remember, every good painting has a center of interest and a defined way for the viewer to get there!
